13 million Malaysians go to the polls

In Malaysia, the 13th general election has been called by Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak after a year-long speculation. More than 13 million Malaysians will go to the polls on May 5. This is the first time that the ruling party has gone through the full five-year term before dissolving parliament. Most feel the ruling coalition has lacked confidence to face the electorate on several contentious issues like race, vote buying, electoral fraud, Hudud law and corruption. It faces growing anger due to rising racial and religious tensions, allegations of corruption involving its leaders directly or indirectly, the rising cost of living, police brutality, continued detention without trial and the awarding of scholarships to students based on racial quota and not merit.


Anwar Ibrahim Charged Again

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim will be charged for April "Bersih" protest. Anwar Ibrahim's meteoric rise up the ranks of the ruling party in 1990s to deputy prime minister ended with his sacking in a falling-out with his boss Mahathir Mohamad (Dr. M).


Anwar Sodomy 2.0 Verdict = Anwar Acquitted

The whole of Malaysia was anxious to hear High Court judge Justice Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah verdict for opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim trial. Where Datuk Anwar had sodomised his former aide, a young 23-year old man, three years ago. About 5,000 people gathered outside the country supreme court located along Jalan Duta in Kuala Lumpur, celebrated on news of his Acquittal. In the common law tradition, an acquittal formally certifies the accused is free from the charge of an offense.


Malaysia Prime Minister Visit Singapore

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak made a two-day working visit to Singapore. Mr Najib was accompanied by Foreign Minister Anifah Aman and Menteri Besar of Johor Abdul Ghani Othman. Prime Minister Najib will meet Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for a discussion on bilateral issues.


Anwar Ibrahim Sacking Was Lawful

The sacking of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister 11 years ago was lawful. The Federal Court ruled against Anwar by Court of Appeal president Alauddin Mohd Sheriff and Federal Court judges Mohd Ghazali Mohd Yusof and Abdull Hamid Embong dismissed Anwar's final appeal for a declaration that his dismissal from his cabinet post as DPM (Deputy Prme Minister) in 1998 was unconstitutional.


English To Teach Math and Science Abandoned

Malaysian education officials announced that they will abandon the use of English to teach math and science, bowing to protesters who demanded more use of the national Malay language. Science and Maths to be taught in Bahasa Malaysia (BM) again. Officially reversing the 6-year English policy in Science and Math education. The teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics in English will be scrapped in stages from 2012 starting with Year 1, Year 4, Form 1 and Form 4.


PM Abdullah Badawi Resigned

Malaysia's PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, age 69, in office for 5½ lackluster years, resigned to make way for Deputy PM Najib Razak, who must now fix an economy close to recession, heal the country's deep racial divisions and revive a moribund ruling party.


Anwar Ibrahim won by-election

Malaysia's opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim won a "landslide" victory in a by-election to return him to parliament, and said he was on track to oust a weakened government. The Malays National Organization (UMNO) and its allies had ruled since independence in 1957.


Anwar Arrested For Second Sodomy

Malaysian police issued an arrest warrant for opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim in connection with a sodomy accusation by a male former aide.  The next day, they arrested opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim on suspicion that he sodomized a male aide, pre-empting his voluntary appearance at the police headquarters to answer the allegation. He was interrogated for more than eight hours and made to sleep on a "cold cement" floor in a holding cell before being released the next day.


Cabinet minister suspended for corruption

Malaysia's ruling UMNO party suspended cabinet minister Isa Samad for six years for corruption.
