RAF Handed Over Sempang Airport To RMAF

Tuesday, 25th October 1960

British Royal Air Force (RAF) handed over their first base in Malaya to the RMAF, the Sempang Airport located in Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur.

Four Chipmunks from the Malayan Auxiliary Air Force at Penang were transferred to The Royal Malayan Air Force. Two aircraft from Kuala Lumpur Flying Club were added to the Chipmunk fleet. The RMAF Flying Training School was established and the first batch of pilots did initial flying training on these aircraft.

1961 Update: The Chipmunks were returned to the Kuala Lumpur Flying Club in 1961 after RMAF acquired 18 x Hunting Percival Provost T1 Mark 51 Trainers.
