Second General Election

Thursday, 16th April 1964

The People's Action Party run on the mainland in the 1964 general election. Although the PAP attracted large crowds at its rallies, it won only one seat by Devan Nair, who represented the Bangsar constituency. It is thought by some historians that Finance Minister and MCA President Tan Siew Sin's appeal to the Chinese to avoid challenging the Malay special rights and risk merger with Indonesia helped the MCA retain its status as the "undisputed leader of the Chinese in the Malayan peninsula". Nevertheless, UMNO leaders were furious with the PAP.


RMAF Renamed From TUDP To TUDM Formed

With the formation of Malaysian Federation on 16 Sept 1963, Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) change is name for TUDP to Tentera Udara Diraja Malaysia (TUDM).


Federation of Malaysia formally established

The Federation of Malaysia was formally established which Singapore, Sabah and Sarawakjoined the Malayan peninsula to form Malaysia. The union with Singapore was rocky from the start. Distrust and ideological differences between leaders of the State of Singapore and the federal government of Malaysia resulted in frequent disagreement in politics, economic, financial and social policies. Tunku Abdul Rahman (TAR), age 60, as the first Prime Minister of Malaysia. He was known as "Tunku" (a princely title in Malaysia), and also called Bapa Kemerdekaan (Father of Independence) or Bapa Malaysia (Father of Malaysia).


RAF Handed Over Sempang Airport To RMAF

British Royal Air Force (RAF) handed over their first base in Malaya to the RMAF, the Sempang Airport located in Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur.


First General Election

The 1959 Malayan general election was the first general election held since the Federation of Malaya first achieved independence from the United Kingdom in 1957. It was the third national-wide election held in Malaya since the end of World War II. Malaya later formed Malaysia with three other states in 1963.


RMAF Was Formed

Tentera Udara Diraja Persekutuan (TUDP) or Royal Malayan Air Force (RMAF) was formed with its roots traced to the Malayan Auxiliary Air Force formations of the British's Royal Air Force (RAF) in the colonial Malaya.


Malaysia gained independence from Britain

Malaysia gained independence from Britain (National Day). Malaysia established itself as a constitutional monarchy. Malaysia established itself as a constitutional monarchy. Article 11 in the constitution gave every person “the right to profess and practice his religion.” Pro-bumiputra (sons of the soil) discrimination was laid down in the constitution to ease Malays’ fears of being marginalized by Chinese and Indian migrants.


Kuala Lumpur Airport Expanded

Expansion of the Kuala Lumpur Airport at Sungai Besi when the building of the terminal building. The Terminal building was for many years an atap shed where communications equipment were unreliable and often aircraft landed without traffic control.
