The whole of Malaysia was anxious to hear High Court judge Justice Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah verdict for opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim trial. Where Datuk Anwar had sodomised his former aide, a young 23-year old man, three years ago. About 5,000 people gathered outside the country supreme court located along Jalan Duta in Kuala Lumpur, celebrated on news of his Acquittal. In the common law tradition, an acquittal formally certifies the accused is free from the charge of an offense.


Anwar Ibrahim Sacking Was Lawful

The sacking of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister 11 years ago was lawful. The Federal Court ruled against Anwar by Court of Appeal president Alauddin Mohd Sheriff and Federal Court judges Mohd Ghazali Mohd Yusof and Abdull Hamid Embong dismissed Anwar's final appeal for a declaration that his dismissal from his cabinet post as DPM (Deputy Prme Minister) in 1998 was unconstitutional.


Anwar Ibrahim won by-election

Malaysia's opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim won a "landslide" victory in a by-election to return him to parliament, and said he was on track to oust a weakened government. The Malays National Organization (UMNO) and its allies had ruled since independence in 1957.


Anwar Arrested For Second Sodomy

Malaysian police issued an arrest warrant for opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim in connection with a sodomy accusation by a male former aide.  The next day, they arrested opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim on suspicion that he sodomized a male aide, pre-empting his voluntary appearance at the police headquarters to answer the allegation. He was interrogated for more than eight hours and made to sleep on a "cold cement" floor in a holding cell before being released the next day.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim walked out a free man after the Federal Court in a 2-1 majority decision allows his appeal against the conviction for sodomy. While Judge Datuk Abdul Hamid Mohamad and Judge Tengku Baharudin Shah Tengku Mahmud ruled in Anwar's favour. Judge Datin Paduka Rahman Hussein was not in favor of Anwar. However, the all the judges noted "We find evidence to confirm that the appellants were involved in homosexual activities and we are more inclined to believe that the alleged incident at Tivoli Villa (Bangsar, KL) did happen." Anwar completed his term for corruption after his sentence was being reduced for good behaviour.


Anwar Ibrahim convicted of sodomy

Anwar Ibrahim was given a nine-year jail sentence for sodomy (engage in an unnatural sexual intercourse) with his family driver Azizan A## B###r. According to Azizan, Anwar was behind him for 15 times between between 1992 to 1997. The prison sentence came on top of a six-year jail term which Anwar is currently serving for corruption would keep Malaysia's main opposition figure in political wilderness until at least 2014. During the highly-charged climax of the 14-month trial, High Court Judge Arifin Jaka ruled that Anwar (age 52) and his adopted brother, Sukma Darmawan (age 39), were guilty of sodomy. Brother Sukma was given six years in prison and four strokes of a cane. Anwar who turns 53 was spared canning, as caning is limited to convicts aged 49 years and below in Malaysia. Prisoners, who show good behaviour in Malaysia, generally serve two-thirds of their jail-terms.

High Court Justice Arifin Jaka begins hearing case against Anwar and his adopted brother Sukma Darmawan Sasmitaat Madja for allegedly sodomising (engaging in an unnatural sexual intercourse) Anwar's family driver Azizan Abu Bakar. Azizan testifies in court he was sodomised 10 to 15 times by Anwar between 1992 and 1993.


Anwar Jailed For Corruption

After 77 days of trial, Anwar is sentenced to six years’ jail by High Court Justice S. Augustine Paul on four counts of corrupt practice. The trial was started in November 1998 and resulted in Anwar Ibrahim being convicted and given a 6 years prison sentence on four counts of corruption.


Azizah Ismail Formed A New Political Party

Azizah Ismail, the wife of Anwar Ibrahim, announced the formation of the National Justice Party and called on opposition forces to topple Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.
